Ambergris Caye

No shoes, no shirt. No Problem!
Welcome to Ambergris Caye! This beautiful island is the most northern and largest of all of the Belize islands. The island is 25 miles long and it runs right beside the ever so famous barrier reef. Once run by Mexico, this beautiful haven is separated from Mexico only by a narrow channel. The main town on the island is San Pedro Town and it is approximately 36 miles from Belize City. La Isla Bonita is known as the 'limestone coral island' because of its cool tropical breezes and nearby barrier reef.
With an approximate population of 8,000 people, Ambergris Caye captures the heart of travelers worldwide. This island (Caye pronounced ‘key’), is the biggest island of 200 or so cayes. If you like diving, or want to learn, you are in for a surprise! People head to Belize every year to enjoy the diving and fantastic snorkeling. The water is usually always a warm treat and photo taking is mandatory! It is located just south of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, and home to the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.
When it comes to the people of Ambergris Caye, the majority of residents are from a Spanish/Mestizo background. Everyone does speak English and Spanish is the second most used language. Tourists can feel comfortable using their own mother tongue, and also brush up on their travel Spanish! Check out this 'travel Spanish' phrase guide for ways to meet and greet with people.

If you want to get around by local transportation, try renting scooters, bicycles, or even a golf cart! Because of the narrow streets, a golf cart is the number one way of transport.
